Josephine Shen, DO, MAOM, is a board-certified physician specializing in Osteopathic Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine, Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine, acupuncture, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Integrative Medicine. What should I expect during my first visit?

What is Osteopathic Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine (ONMM)?
ONMM is a specialized, board-certified branch of medicine focusing on the deep relationship between body structure and function. Treatments involve precise, hands-on physical manipulation to resolve structural restrictions, alleviate biomechanical pain, and support your body’s natural capacity to heal.
Is the SAAT allergy treatment permanent, and does it hurt?
Soliman Auricular Allergy Treatment (SAAT) is a specialized, minimally invasive ear acupuncture technique designed to significantly reduce or eliminate specific severe sensitivities. It involves placing an ultra-fine, tiny needle that is worn safely for a few weeks, prompting a targeted healing response from the nervous system.
Do you accept medical insurance?
Yes. Our community-focused practice believes thorough, root-cause care should be accessible.
Apex Osteopathic Medicine currently accepts the following insurance plans:
- Government Plans: We accept Traditional Medicare Part B. (We do not accept Medicare Advantage or other Medicare plan variants at this time, but we are actively working on expanding this coverage soon).
- Commercial Networks: We are fully in-network with Curative commercial insurance plans.
- Military Families: We accept TRICARE as an authorized, non-network participating provider (see our dedicated TRICARE section below for plan details).
What about other commercial insurance networks?
For all other commercial networks, patients can be seen on a self-pay basis at this time. We will gladly provide you with an official Superbill when requested, which you can submit directly to your carrier to seek out-of-network reimbursement.
Please note: We are actively working through the credentialing process with additional major commercial insurance providers to expand our coverage.
Additionally, we do not accept West Virginia Medicaid at this time, but we are also working through the credentialing process to accept it in the near future.

How does TRICARE work at your clinic?
We proudly treat military families as a TRICARE-Authorized, Non-Network Participating Provider.
What “Participating” means for your care:
- We handle the paperwork: We will submit your medical claims directly to TRICARE for you.
- No surprise billing: We accept the TRICARE-allowable charge as payment in full. You will not be balance-billed for more than the allowed rate for covered services.
- Your responsibility: You are responsible for your standard TRICARE non-network deductible, copay, or cost-share amounts at the time of your visit.
Referral requirements by plan type:
- TRICARE Select, Reserve Select, & TRICARE for Life: No referral needed. You can schedule your osteopathic care with us directly.
- TRICARE Prime (Active Duty & Retirees): Yes, an out-of-network referral is required. You must obtain an authorized referral from your Primary Care Manager (PCM) prior to your visit. Seeing us without a PCM referral triggers TRICARE’s “Point of Service” (POS) charges, resulting in a 50% out-of-pocket cost-share for you.
We accept and process claims for all regions, including TRICARE East, TRICARE West, and Overseas beneficiaries.
